Delaware is a state of the United States. It is known as the "First
State" because it was the first of the 13 colonies to ratify
the United States Constitution. Delaware is bounded to the north
by Pennsylvania, to the east by the Delaware River and the Atlantic
Ocean and to the west and south by Maryland. Small portions of Delaware
are also situated on the far, or eastern, side of the Delaware River
Estuary, and these small parcels share land boundaries with New
Jersey.
Since the great majority of Delaware is a part of the Atlantic Coastal
Plain, the climate is moderated by the effects of the ocean. The
southern third of the state has a mild subtropical climate, with
hot, humid summers and mild winters. the middle portion is the transition
to the upper portion of the state, which has a warm continental
climate and receives occassional winter snowfall.
Delaware is home to the Little Brown Jug, harness racing's most
prestigious event for standardbred horses. |
